City of Promise is proud to offer two opportunities for deserving community members

Applications are Open!
Applications are open for the annual Sarad Davenport Promise of Education Award and DeSoto Jordan Senior of Promise Award. These scholarships are generously funded by Charlottesville community members and honor two impactful community leaders, Sarad Davenport and Desoto "De" Jordan.
Each scholarship is worth $1000 and is available to any 2024 graduate of Charlottesville City Schools who is a first-generation or low-income student planning to attend a 2- or 4-year college or vocational school or start a career. The deadline to apply is July 14th, 2024. Scholarships will be awarded at our annual Gamechangers event on August 1, 2024.

Sarad Davenport Promise of Education Award
The Sarad Davenport Award was established in 2022 by Steven and Nicole Le of Charlottesville.
A 1997 graduate of Charlottesville High School, Sarad earned a bachelor's degree from Old Dominion University and a master's degree from Virginia Union University. In 2012, he was named founding director of City of Promise, where he established deep relationships and program models that continue to thrive.
Sarad is founder of DSID, a consulting firm focused on human centered design. He lives in Louisa County
with his wife and three children.


DeSoto Jordan Senior of Promise Award
The DeSoto Jordan Award was established in 2022 by Gene and Ann Gartner in honor of their long-time friend DeSoto "De" Jordan.

De Jordan was born in 1944 into extreme poverty, yet he earned his master's degree in political science from Colorado State University, was the first African American to integrate the college's fraternity system, served the United States Army in the Vietnam War, and went on to a highly successful corporate career at Electronic Data Systems, Blue Cross and Blue Shield, and Perot Systems.

Mr. Jordan and his wife are horse enthusiast, residing on their farm in Culpeper, Virginia.
