Volunteer: Reading Tutoring

The Initiative
Data on literacy proficiency demonstrates that black and economically-disadvantaged students are lagging their peers locally. Only 40% of black students in Charlottesville City Schools are reading on grade level, falling behind their peers and the state average for that cohort (60%). 42% of economically disadvantaged students are on grade level.
Meanwhile, in those same schools, receiving the same instruction, 89% of white students read on grade level. It is clear that the totality of ones education does't take place within the 4 walls of the school. It is also greatly impacted by what happens outside of them.

During their K-12 years, kids spend over 80% of their waking hours outside of school. By providing high-fidelity, high-dose programs that reinforce what's being taught in school, we can have an outsized impact on literacy rates in Charlottesville.

How it Works
To close the literacy gap that has been increasing year over year, we need people who are committed to supplementing students' in-school learning with tutoring outside of the classroom. If this sounds like you (thanks in advance!), the first step is to create an account on our Volunteer Portal (click the button below).
In order to provide the highest continuity of instruction possible, we ask that our prospective reading tutors complete a one-time training program administered by Virginia Literacy Partnerships (VLP) certifying you to teach reading and giving you a structure to use to improve student literacy.

If you are interested, create an account in our portal and we will support you in scheduling this training with VLP.
